Business debt consolidation: the UK guide
How UK limited companies consolidate multiple business loans, asset finance and invoice finance into a single lower monthly repayment, and free up working capital in the process.
Why consolidate business debt
Most UK owner managed businesses are paying more for their debt than they need to. Loans were taken out when rates, products and lender appetite were different. Since then the market has moved, but few finance directors have the time to test it again.
Business debt consolidation replaces a tangle of legacy facilities with one cleaner agreement. The headline benefit is usually a lower monthly cost. The bigger benefit is operating cash flow: working capital freed up to hire, invest and grow the business you actually want.
What you should get from a consolidation
- One monthly repayment in place of five, six or more separate direct debits.
- Lower headline rate by refinancing onto current market pricing.
- Longer term to reduce the monthly cost and improve operating cash flow.
- No early settlement surprises, we model break fees into the comparison.
- Working capital freed up to reinvest in the business, not to service legacy debt.
How to consolidate business debt, step by step
- 01
Map every active facility
List every business loan, asset finance agreement, hire purchase, invoice finance facility, overdraft and merchant cash advance. For each one capture the outstanding balance, the interest rate, the remaining term and the monthly cost.
- 02
Calculate the blended cost
Add up the monthly cost of every facility, then work out the weighted average interest rate across the debt stack. This is the true cost you are paying, not the headline rate on any single agreement.
- 03
Benchmark the live market
UK business lending has moved. Compare your blended cost against current rates for companies of similar size and trading history. Most owner managed businesses are paying materially more than the market is offering today.
- 04
Model a single consolidation loan
Run the numbers on consolidating multiple facilities into one term loan, often with a longer tenor. A lower monthly repayment frees up working capital for hiring, stock, marketing or simply more comfortable cash flow.
- 05
Switch and settle the old facilities
Draw the new consolidation facility, settle the existing lenders directly, and switch the direct debits. One monthly repayment, one lender, one statement to reconcile.
